Death of Andrew F. Hoffer (1873-6 Jul 1899), Resident of Dorchester, Wisconsin
Dr. Lerny S.Townsend, Hospital Doctor in Copper City Alaska, has arrived here
(Baltimore, Md.)
Since February, 1898, he has headed the hospital in that inhospitable area and
during this time the following prospectors died in the institution: Andrew
Hoffer of Dorchester, Wisc.; A. B. Gaines by Roslin Wafh; Samuel W. Baker of San
Francisco; H. D. Shaw, Nick Uhan, S.Milligan, Jack Hayden, Dan Cushman, Dan
Manard, Dan McCullough, Wesley Schneideger, A. Louis, I. Hackert and Brown. Most
of them succumbed to scurvy and climbing over the Baldez Glacier killed 15
prospectors.
