Schumacher, Lu Verne (Honor - 1978)

When Lu Verne Schumacher, rural Granton, was a youngster she was caught up in a tornado while playing in an Augusta yard. Although it punctured her ear drums and threw trees around her, she escaped after being whirled around and around.

Lu Verne is approaching another cyclone, this one of activity, when the village of Granton will honor her as citizen of the year during the annual Fall Festival, September 8, 9, and 10. She recently retired as manager and supervisor of the Granton Public Schools’ cafeteria, a post she has held for the past 13 years. Her honoring is a continuation of the annual selection of a respected citizen by the community and she will also, continue the tradition by being the center of attention during the festival and parade.

Everyone in the Granton area knows Mrs. Schumacher and many in west central Wisconsin also would soon recognize her. For numerous years, she and her yellow Buick convertible have travelled from parade to parade, carrying Granton Princesses and other royalty. This year, that same convertible will be used to carry Lu Verne in style.

Mrs. Schumacher grew up and attended schools in the Augusta area. She married Vernon (Shorty) Schumacher on October 11, 1931, and they farmed in the Fairchild area until 1943 when… (This was continued on page 2 and that was not found for me to type.)
