Hurley, Brenda Kay (8 November 1944 – 4 September 1978)

A 33-year-old mother of two was killed in a Town of Pine Valley farm accident early Monday afternoon. Pronounced dead on arrival at Neillsville Memorial Hospital was Mrs. Bernard (Brenda Kay) Hurley, who received fatal internal injuries in an accident involving a farm tractor and chopper wagon.

According to sheriff’s department reports, Mrs. Hurley was riding on the draw bar located between the tractor and the wagon, when the tractor hit a bump causing her to fall and was then run over by a chopper wagon loaded of straw.

Her husband, Bernard, who was driving the tractor at the time of the accident, attempted unsuccessfully to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the victim after she lost consciousness and succumbed to her injuries.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust, Iowa, was to be the early afternoon, September 9, site for the funeral of Brenda Hurley, with the Rev. Paul Nelson, Lime Springs, Iowa, officiating. The Steine Funeral Home, Decorah, was to handle final arrangements with the Georgas-Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, participating in the early planning.

At the time of her death, she was employed as a part time nurse at the Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

On April 10, 1966, she married Bernard A. Hurley in a Locust, Iowa, ceremony. From that union came two sons, Jon and Jason, both at home. The couple recently moved to the former Harry King farm, located on West King Road, Rt. 2 Neillsville.
