Greenwood-West Point Seminar (Horn - 1978)

Among representatives from 22 high schools from western Wisconsin and upper Michigan attending the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium were three students from the Greenwood Community High School. They are Luann Horn, Sue Richmond and Kathy Fravert. Attending with them was their advisor, Knute Wallin.

Luann presented a paper entitled, “The effects of Pollution on the Types and Numbers of Benthic Organism in a Fluvial Environment.” From the total of 16 papers, four will be presenting their research at another symposium, to be held at West Point, in the spring.

Subjects of other studies included computerized music, use of wild plants for food sources and making paper from recycled fibers.

The symposium included bog studies and a short course in orienteering (the use of compass and map). A total of 66 students participated in the September 21 to 29 event.

During the summer months, Luann has spent seven weeks studying under the National Science Foundation, hosed by UW-Superior at the Center for Lake Superior Environmental Studies. She had applied for the project with 29 selected from across the United States. She received four college credits for her work.

Luann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Horn; Sue Richmond is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerald Richmond; and Kathy Fravert is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Fravert. All of the Greenwood area.
