Strommer, Arthur M. (18 November 1904 – 31 October 1978)

A former Greenwood resident, who was internationally recognized for his work is developing hybrid varieties of corn, passed away in his Spooner home, on Tuesday, October 31. Deceased is Arthur M. Strommer, 73, who’s work with hybrid corn back in 1936 increased yields by fifteen bushels an acre.

Strommer was born on November 18, 1904, in Blanchardville. He received his early education in the Greenwood Schools, gaining a high school diploma in 1924. He then attended UW-Madison’s school of Agriculture, completing his master’s degree in 1938. It was during his collegiate days that he was married to Minerva Macon, October 11, 1930, in Greenwood. The couple moved to Spooner in 1935.

Surviving him is his wife; one daughter, Mrs. William Bonesho, Roseville, Minnesota; one son, Gene, Virginia Beach, Virginia; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held November 4 from Trinity Lutheran Church, Spooner, with burial in the Spooner Cemetery.

Attending the funeral was his sister-in-law Mrs. David (Clarissa) Danielson and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Elmer, of Greenwood, and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Steele, Wausau, the deceased’s nephew and wife.
