Gengler, Anton J. (19 Dec 1884 – 25 Mar 1973)
Anton J. Gengler, 88, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Edward Sigmund, Route 3, Ft. Atkinson, where he had lived the
past ten years.
Born at Port Washington on December 19, 1884, he was the son of Peter and
Theresa (Smith) Gengler. In 1908 he married Catherine Bodewin at Thorp,
Wisconsin. She died in 1970.
He was a salesman for Standard Oil Company and worked for many years as a member
of the Democratic Party in Northern Wisconsin, developing the REA and Social
Security Benefits.
H ewas a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, the
oldest living member of Msgr. Thomas F. Berry Council of Knights of Columbus, a
charter member of the Medford Council of Knights of Columbus, a lifelong member
of the Farmer’s Union and the Democratic Party.
Survivors are three sons, Anthony of Vespers, Wisconsin, Eugene of West Bend and
Matthew of Medford; four daughters, Mrs. Martin Bowen of West Chicago, Illinois,
Mrs. Walter Sigmund of Medford, Mrs. Theresa Zeman, Fort Atkinson, and Mrs.
Edward Sigmund, Route 2, Fort Atkinson; 41 grandchildren and 52
great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick’s Church, with burial in
Calvary Cemetery. The Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hickey-Kent
Funeral Home.
