Landmark Building Being Removed (Oct 1979)

----Source: TRG (Abbotsford, Clark Co., Wis.) 10 Oct 1979
An old Landmark on Loyal’s Main Street will soon be gone. Residents referred to
it as the Bannach Building, or the Loyal School and Officer Supply, but old
timers claim it house a variety of businesses in former days.
At one time it was a saloon, for a long part of it served as a barbershop, and
it was even a garage.
In 1931, the building became the home for the Loyal Tribune after fire destroyed
the Allen Block Building. Lawrence Cowles and Jack Steiner were the publishers
at that time.
In the 1950’s Lee Fraveau moved the Loyal Tribune to its present location and
Lawrence Cowles expanded the office supply business, which he continue to
operate. When Mr. Cowles retired several years ago, the building has been
vacant, except for the time the Clark County Nutritional Center used part of the
building.
The home in back of the building was the residence of Mrs. John Bannach until
her death.
The Bannach property has been purchased by the City of Loyal. Several years ago
it had been offered, but council members turned down the idea. This past summer
the present council became interested once again and made an offer. The offer
was accepted.
Just what will become of the site remains to be seen. The City is presently
planning to remove the building from the site. An ad a[[ears in this issue
asking for sealed bids. Meanwhile, Mayor Jim Helm is leaving the door open,
incase someone would be interested in a Main Street lot in “The Shopping Center
City.”
