Burkhalter Family (Reunion - 1979)
From the Granton News Column:
Mr./Mrs. Marvin Burkhalter and children, Mavis, Michael, Leslie, Sarah and Gene,
attended a Burkhalter reunion, held Sunday at Ernie Burkhalter home, Tomah.
There were fifty relatives, all descendants of Gottfried and Rosetta (Becher)
Burkhalter. Three brothers, Sam of California, Alfred of Tomah, and Emil of
Sparta are the remaining of thirteen children in the original Burkhalter family.
Recollections given by Fred Burkhalter of Monroe who told of making limburger
cheese from the time he was nine years old and how he used to pat pounds of salt
around the cheese in order to have it form a rind. Jacob, a brother of
Gottfried, came to America from Switzerland and sent money home to have each
brother come to America. Most Burkhalter brothers settled in Monroe, described
as quite a bit like home. They started making cheese in factories they built.
