Stewart, Velma (17 April 1902 – 18 August 1979)
Mrs. Velma Stewart, 77, formerly of Greenwood, died August 18 in a Lake City, Mn.,
nursing home. Mrs. Stewart, the former Velma Looker, was born April 17, 1902, in
Richland County to Mr. and Mrs. William Looker. After receiving her early
education in that area, she came with her family to Clark County, residing in
Withee. Prior to her June 3, 1923, marriage to Wilber A. Stewart in Withee
ceremonies, the deceased taught schools in Clark and Taylor Counties.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women,
Missionary Society and the Home Interest Homemakers Club. The couple owned and
operated Stewart’s Cheese Factory and resided in Greenwood since 1946.
Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Van Keuren,
of Wooster, Oh, and Mrs. Everett (Mary) Humke of Rochester, Mn., a son, Dr.
Kenton M. Stewart, Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers, Leslie of LaFarge and Theron of
Tracy, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Veda Mertens, of Stanley, Mrs. Opal Lang of
Orange, Calif.; and Mrs. Unita Mavis of Concord, Calif.; and eight
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, August 21, from Grace United
Methodist Church. The Rev. Donald Adams officiated with burial in the Greenwood
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jeffrey and James Van Keuren, Scot and Danny Stewart,
and Keith and Russell Lang. Music was provided by Mrs. Ruth Horn, Mrs. Clifford
Tubbs and Mrs. Arlie Dent.
