Welzien, Emil (1 Apr 1886 – 03 Aug 1973)
Funeral services for Emil Welzien, 87, Thorp, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3
at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church here. The Reverend R.W. Olson officiated, and
burial was made in the Reseburg (Sylvan) Cemetery.
Mr. Welzien died of an apparent heart attack at his home early Friday morning.
Pallbearers were Reuben Rossman, Charles Kolodziej, Stanley Burzinski, Toivo
Nevala, Lyle Stelter and Ray Giwojna.
Mr. Welzien was born in Beaver Dam April 1, 1886, and grew up in Redfield, South
Dakota. He was married September 21, 1914 at Brainerd, Minnesota, to the former
Grace Mock of Stanley, who survives him. They had farmed in the town of Reseburg
for 44 years before retiring and moving to Thorp eight years ago.
He had served on the Reseburg Town Board for 30 years, and was a member of the
Clark County Board of Supervisors for 25 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Clarence Welzien, Boyd, and
Alan Welzien, Loyal; a brother, Ernest Welzien; a sister, Mrs. Aurelia Strassman,
Canton; five grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
