Schafer, Margie Lou (22 Mach 1930 – 27 September 2021)
Margie Lou Schafer, age 91, of Owen, passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021,
at the Marshfield Medical Center.
Margie was born on March 22, 1930, the daughter of Harold and Margaret (Oakley)
Kirkman in Chicago, IL. She graduated from Senn High School in Chicago and
received her teaching degree from Illinois State Normal University in 1951. She
taught Junior High for a few years. On June 11, 1955, Margie was united in
marriage to Dale Schafer at Evangelical Free Church in Libertyville, IL. In
1976, they bought a farm in rural Owen.
Margie was a teacher all her life and taught Sunday School for 70 years in
Illinois and at Curtiss Alliance Church. She also served as Sunday School
Superintendent, helped with the Women’s Missionary and AWANA. Margie also was a
member of the Midway Homemakers and 4-H. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading
and painting. Margie had many gifts and she shared them with her many students
and especially her grandchildren.
Margie is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dale; two children: Sharon
(Lester) Leiby of Dorchester and Stephen (Kelly) Schafer of Curtiss; nine
grandchildren: Brian (Laura) Leiby, Benjamin (Tara) Leiby, Andrew Leiby, Nathan
(Cassie) Leiby, Christine (Stephen) Aiken, Aaron (Heidi) Leiby, Leyla (Valentin)
Molner, Michael Schafer and Grace Schafer; 12 great-grandchildren: Kaitlin,
Natalie, Evan, Darren, Parker, Caleb, Jihun, Maya, Evelyn, Lachlan, Michaela and
Matthew. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Elsie (age 2) and Eileen
Lewis in 2017.
A private Graveside Service will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery in Curtiss. A
Memorial Service will be held at the Curtiss Alliance Church at a later date.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the care and compassion
shown to Margie from the Marshfield Clinic Staff, especially Dr. Benjamin and
Nurse Tammy.
