Neillsville Recreation Department Bids Farewell to Lindner (2023)
By Edward Dubois
For 43 years, Judy Lindner has headed the Neillsville Recreation Department.
However, nothing can last forever.
April 11, the Personnel Committee discussed Judy Lindner’s letter of
resignation, intending to retire from the position, and recommended its
acceptance to the Neillsville City Council, and was thusly accepted while the
council moved to fill her vacancy.
Lindner officially retired July 1, just before Heritage Days commenced, and was
honored both with a spot in the Heritage Days parade July 9 and with cupcakes in
her honor afterward.
Lindner has been more than just the Recreation Director, though, and also served
with the Neillsville Booster Club.
“[The Neillsville Booster Club] fit in perfectly with my position as Recreation
Director,” Lindner said.
Lindner has served as the secretary of the club for the past 20 years, and has
organized four or five youth basketball tournaments yearly in addition to
fast pitch softball tournaments and youth volleyball tournaments.
Lindner has been a solid fundraiser for the club in addition to bringing
thousands of players and spectators to the city throughout the years.
Lindner is also a part of the Neillsville Optimist Club, being one of the few
“charter” members still involved. She assisted with various youth events, while
leading the “Tri-Star Basketball” event for the past “15-ish years.”
Lindner said she enjoys working with the very dedicated members of the Optimist
Club, offering events for the youth of the community to stay active, and
described it as a very “family-orientated” group, offering many “old fashioned,
wholesome” activities.
There comes a time, though, when a person feels the need to move on, for one
reason or another. Lindner had her reasons, too.
“The fact that I wasn’t getting any younger and the job (at least how I
perceived it) required my 100% time and energy and I felt I didn’t want to let
down or disappoint the constituents of the Neillsville community,” Lindner said.
“Especially the kids.
“I believe the Recreation Department had a solid base of which a new director
could build from; solid facilities and tremendous support from both the city and
school leaders.
“It was time for another individual to offer fresh ideas. Also, the fact that I
have eight active, perfect grandchildren and having missed some of the early
milestones of their life, it was time to put my priorities in order.
“I also have the blessing of a few very good friends who I enjoy spending time
with hiking, biking, playing pickleball, disc golfing, snow shoeing, golfing,
kayaking and other events which get me out in the fresh air.
“[I] also love to spend many hours in my garden and enjoy helping out the
elderly with their yard projects/needs.”
No matter the trials and tribulations, when someone leaves a position like this,
there will inevitably be things to be missed.
“What will I miss,” Lindner said, “[is] the interaction with the people,
especially the kids. [I] loved seeing the smile on their faces when they
mastered a skill we had been working on or maybe scored their first basket.
“[I] especially enjoyed seeing the ‘non-stud athlete’ succeed and receive the
adoration that every participant craves and deserves. I took pride in never
worrying about the ‘name game,’ made sure to treat all with the respect they
deserve and am very confident that my successor will do the same.
“I will also greatly miss the many adults who volunteered their time and skills
to help conduct youth programs. Without them, nothing would have been possible
and many, many opportunities for kids to realize success would have been wasted.
“It has been a privilege to serve the community of Neillsville for the past 43
years. […] I will truly cherish the memories.”
Lindner’s daughter, Jessica Brown, was chosen as Lindner’s successor, her duties
having begun July 1.
July 1, Jessica Brown (l) took over for her mother, Judy Lindner (r), as the
Neillsville Recreation Department’s director. Judy Lindner has overseen the
Neillsville Recreation Department for 43 years. Edward Dubois/Clark County Press
“I kicked off the position on a Saturday due to the youth track meet,” Brown
said. “I was inspired to take the position to uphold my mom’s legacy. I know how
hard she worked for the past 43 years. No one, besides her own family, can even
begin to imagine the countless hours and energy she put into building the
recreation department up to what it is today.
“I wanted to continue her programs to the best of my ability and hopefully bring
some new ideas and programs, as well. As a community member with four kids, I
wanted to ensure that the [Recreation Department] only got better, and nothing
was lost in the transition.
“I’m open to new ideas and suggestions from the community to continue building
on the opportunities we have here in Neillsville.”
As a teacher and coach for the past 13 years, Brown described having a passion
for working with kids and sports.
“This position will allow me to continue to build relationships with the
community members and allow me to spend my time doing the things I love,” Brown
said. “I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working with
everyone.”
Brown started working for the Recreation Department when she was 14.
“I’m sure I was ‘volunteering’ long before that,” Brown said, “but I have been
an employee of the [Recreation Department] for the past 22 years.
“I started with lifeguarding, running the Juniorettes softball programs and
scorekeeping for whatever sport [Lindner] needed help with.
“Over the years, it turned into running swimming lessons, coaching various
teams, officiating games and helping assist with running tournaments. I feel the
transition into the director role will be natural for myself as I have lived the
‘[Recreation Department]’ lifestyle my entire life.”
Brown jumped right into the director role and has taken over all of the programs
that are currently up and running.
“This next week,” Brown said, “we will finish up most of the youth baseball and
softball programs. Those conclude with short award ceremonies and ice cream
treats for all.
“Women’s volleyball and Men’s softball will continue into the beginning of
August. We are starting up a new program in August. We will be having Adaptive
Open Swim from 6:30–7:30 on Monday
evenings. This program is designed to give individuals with disabilities and
their families time to explore the water and have fun.”
More information about this opportunity can be found on the Neillsville
Recreation Department’s Facebook page.

Cows, Plows and Wine Serves Owen-Withee FFA (2023)
By L. B., reporter
Munsen Bridge Winery hosted Cows, Plows and Wine July 15, 2023, an event
sponsored by the Owen-Withee FFA Alumni.
“FFA Alumni and their supporters’ host,” said Travis Engel, director of Cows,
Plows and Wine. “It’s a fundraiser for FFA and they usually spend the money on
the kids. The proceeds go to the Owen-Withee High School CDE or Agricultural
Education Department, any FFA events that require registration, hotel rooms and
the like.”
On average, over 300 people attend the event. This is the ninth year of hosting
Cows, Plows and Wine for Munsen Bridge Winery. The winery served a pulled pork
dinner as its main course along with many refreshments and drinks. Root beer
floats and wine floats were new beverages that guests could enjoy, with root
beer for kids and wine for adults. Wine floats are a mixture of MBW wine and
soft serve ice cream.
The popular game, “CA$H COW,” at the beginning of the Cows, Plows and Wine event
July 15 was already missing money slots.

Guests participated in gun raffles, paddle raffles, the “CA$H COW” game and a
bucket raffle with over 50 donations from businesses and local groups. Later in
the night, people got on the floor to dance to the DJ and bid on auction items.
The night was a success for the FFA Alumni and the people it benefits, raising
over $2,000 for the cause.
