The year was January 1921; British crime writer' Agatha Christie published her
first novel "The Mysterious Affair at Styles." In February, the Yankees
purchased 20 acres in the Bronx to build Yankee Stadium. In March, Toronto's Dr.
Banting and Dr. Best announce the discovery of insulin and in April, Albert
Einstein lectured in New York City on his new "Theory of Relativity."
In Rome, Pope Benedict XV was leading the Catholic Church and in Washington
D.C., President Warren G. Harding was leading the free world.
History would eventually call it "The Greatest Generation" but for Lublin
resident, Rose Sromek, she simply calls 1921 her birth year.
Rose was born 100 years ago on Sunday, September 25, 1921, in the small village
of Lublin, Wisconsin, where she still lives today.
Rose wakes up every morning at 6:30 and eats breakfast with her son Jerry. She
then gets in a bit of exercise followed by a time of prayer. When lunchtime
comes around, she eats with her daughter Sharon. In the afternoon Rose likes to
play some cards or maybe call friends on the phone. She eats dinner with her
daughter Judy and spends her evenings watching television or working on
crossword puzzles before she goes to bed.
In a life that has spanned 10 decades Rose sure has seen many important
inventions but she says that the greatest invention in her lifetime is
television. Rose tells the Courier that if she could give advice to the younger
generations it would be to treat others as you would want to be treated.
When ask what her earliest memory was Rose said it was living in a one room
cabin with an outside toilet in the late 1920's. If she could go back in time
and give her younger self some advice Rose said she would tell herself "Not to
worry so much, it all works its self out."
Rose worked at Wolf Pharmacy and Peoples Exchange Bank in Thorp and Lublin for
several years while still helping on the family farm.
I asked Rose if there was anything that she wanted to do that she had not gotten
around to doing in her 100 years of life, she said "Finish high school and
college, but I guess I did alright without it."
You May be wondering what the secret to Rose's longevity and good health are.
She says it is to "Eat good food, get good rest and enjoy your family."
Happy 100th Birthday Rose from all of us at The Thorp Courier!
