Hein, William Frederick (21 December 1882 – 28 April 1980)
William F. Hein, a 90-year-old resident of Humbird, died in a Scott City,
Kansas, nursing home on April 28. He was 97.
The Weinmann-Price Funeral Home of Scott City arranged for cremation with
interment to be in the Mentor Cemetery, at Humbird, following memorial services
on May 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the Humbird United Methodist Church. The Rev. Walter
Jenswold of Humbird is to officiate.
William Frederick Hein was born to Valentin and Theresa Hein at the parent’s
home near the old mill on Lake Emerson, December 21, 1882. He was one of five
children. He grew up helping his father and brother run the mail while attending
Humbird School.
In 1907, he married Kittie Phillips and they lived on the Hein place until the
old house burned in 1915. They returned when it was rebuilt a few years later.
In 1911, Hein became a Humbird mail carrier, a position he held for 32 years,
retiring in 1943. In earlier years, besides being a mail carrier, Hein served as
a telegraph operator at the Humbird depot and also worked as a carpenter. (The
Tioga School was built with his help.) He was also active in town affairs,
recently donating land upon which Humbird’s lake side park is located.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and its choir, the Modern Woodmen of
America and the old Humbird Cornet Band. In 1973, the Heins, due to their age,
left their Humbird home to be near a daughter, Beth, in Kansas. On January 9,
1978, Mrs. Hein passed away. He is survived by a daughter, Beth Jeffrey, Scott
City, Kansas; a son, Col. Neil F. Hein, Chipita Park, Colorado; two grandsons;
and three great-grandchildren.
Also to be Remembered
At the service for William R. Hein, tribute will also be paid to his deceased
daughter-in-law, Marion (Wilson) Hein, wife of Col. Neil F. Hein. She passed
away February 27 this year. Her cremated remains will also be buried in the Town
of Mentor Cemetery. Mrs. Hein was born on October 4, 1908, in Birmingham,
Alabama, and was married to Col. Hein on July 19, 1936, in Denver, Colorado.
She was a member of the 99’s, an international women’s pilot organization and
maintained her pilot’s license until her death. She was also a member of the
Colorado College Women’s Educational Society, the Retired Officer’s Wives’ Club
and the Historical Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
Her survivors include her husband, and a son Neil F. Hein, Jr., Stockton,
California.
Local arrangements are being handled by the Jensen Funeral Home, Hixton.

Hein, Kittie Luella (2 September 1886 – 9 January 1978)
Mrs. Kittie Luella Hein, Scott City, Ks., and formerly a Humbird resident, died
in the Scott County Hospital on January 9, at the age of 91 years. The Weinman-Price
Mortuary of Scott City arranged for cremation. Interment of the remains will be
in the Mentor Cemetery at Humbird following memorial services planned to be held
in Humbird sometime in May.
Kittie Luella Phillips was born in Mr. Sterling, on September 2, 1886, one of
five children. She was living with her parents, Sylvester and Rhoda Phillips, on
their Jackson County farm, across the road from the Zerbel farm, when she met
and married William F. Hein, of Humbird in 1907. They then lived on the Hein
place near the old mill on Lake Emerson. Here they lived, except for a period
pending the rebuilding of the old home, which burned in 1915, until 1973. During
most of this time, William was the mail carrier on Rt. 1 Humbird.
In 1973, the rigors of old age and several years of ill health for Mrs. Hein
dictated leaving Humbird to be near their daugher, Beth, in Kansas. Mrs. Hein
enjoyed the years with her daughter, Beth, in Kansas, even though her health
continued to deteriorate.
In her earlier years, she was a member of the Methodist Church, the Royal
Neighbors and the Excelsior Club. Last October, the couple celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary and Mr. Hein’s 95th birthday in December. The couple was
honored as king and queen of the Humbird Centennial Celebration in 1969.
Mrs. Hein is survived by her husband, William F. Hein, Scott City, Ks.; a
sister, Cora B. Stanley, Memorial Home, Neillsville; a daughter, Beth Jeffery,
Scott City, Ks., a son, Colonel (Ret.) Neil F. Hein, Chipita park, Co.,
two
grandsons, Jim Jeffery, Scott City, Ks, and Neil F. Hein, Jr., Stockton, Ca,,
and three great-grandchildren.

Krebsbach, Melanie Marie “Lanie” (13 February 1927 – 29 June 2024)
Angels came early Saturday morning of June 29, 2024, to lead Melanie “Lanie”
(Kaiser) Krebsbach to her eternal home and into the arms of her husband, Ray,
and son, Darrel.
Lanie was born in Stratford on February 13, 1927, the eighth of eleven children
born to Alphonse and Pauline (Weber) Kaiser. She was a graduate of Edgar High
School’s class of 1945. On June 11, 1946, she married Raymond Krebsbach at St.
John Catholic Church in Edgar.
The early years of their marriage were spent farming in the Edgar area and then
later purchasing the farm in Colby in 1955. There Lanie enjoyed working outside
on the farm with her husband and tending a large garden with her family. She was
the mom who gathered up the neighborhood kids for a swim at Cherokee Park in the
summer or to ice skate on the river in the winter. Lanie was an active member of
St. Mary Catholic Church, belonging to St. Theresa’s Group, the Christian Home
and School Association, and the Christian Mother’s Organization. She also held
office in the Colby PTA. Lanie spent countless hours volunteering including
working to protect the unborn. She possessed a strong faith and devotion to God
which she passed on to her family.
In 1971, Lanie took the Betty Crocker Search for the American Homemaker of
Tomorrow exam on which she received an Excellent score, again proving her
expertise in running a busy household. But the award she was most proud of
receiving was being chosen a “Woman of Light” in 2014 by the Diocese of La
Crosse for her commitment to safeguard life from conception to natural death.
Lanie enjoyed gardening, baking, quilting, and playing softball and volleyball
with her home team of children. The weekend would often include a Friday night
fish fry and Saturday night dancing with Ray to the Howie Sturtz Band. As her
children grew up and left the nest, she began selling World Book Encyclopedias
and made many World Book friends. She and Ray had many traveling adventures
visiting Lourdes, Ireland, Fatima, Medjugorie, and Hawaii. In 2009 Melanie was
able to complete her bucket list of travel to visit the Holy Land with two of
her daughters and her sister.
Lanie was blessed with a quick laugh which helped her survive and thrive,
raising 13 children. A favorite adage cherished by her family is “to eat dessert
first.” She is survived by Sandra (Richard) Gawryleski and their children: Greg,
Stefanie, and bonus children Linda, Sharon and Charlene; Patricia (Alan)
Ridderbusch and their children, Scott, Jennifer, and Carol; Daniel (Diane) and
their children: Heather, Tiffany, and Tara; Dale (Linda) and their children:
Dallas and bonus children Heather and Holly; Keith (Sherri) and their children:
Amanda, Joseph, Nicholas, and Jacob; Roger (Laurie) and their children: Katie,
Janelle, Lyndsey, and Emily; Mary (Kevin) Lieders and their children: Nathan,
Trenton, Andrew, and Lauren; Sue (Jerry) Grunow and their children: Drew and
Christina; Kevin (Beth) and their children: Keegan and Lexi; Dawn (Jack) Wood;
Renee (David) Phillips and their children: Leasay, Clayton, and Samuel; Jill
(Joe) Goodwin and their children: Jenna, Jared, and Jadyn. Melanie is further
survived by 36 great-grandchildren, five bonus great-grandchildren, and two
soon-to-be-born great-grandchildren. Her sisters Anna Mae Rasmussen, Margie
Krautkramer, and sister-in-law Winnie Kaiser also survive.
We are grateful for the team of caregivers who so lovingly cared for Lanie,
under the guidance of Compassus Hospice, allowing her to remain in her home
these past several months.
