business, magna cum laude was among 676 students receiving degrees from the
University of Wisconsin-River Falls following fall commencement in December of

received graduate degrees.

Flags Given to Flame (14 June 2024)
A ceremonial flag burning was held June 14 at the Neillsville American Legion.
The ceremony included the commander verifying that all flags present were beyond
repair for various reasons with the vice commanders of the ceremony. One person
was designated as chaplain, who said a prayer for those who served what the
flags stood for before the flags were committed to the flames.

Greenwood-Last June Dairy Breakfast For The Year (30 June 2024)
Gary and Brenda Lindner’s Farm in Loyal hosted the Greenwood June Dairy
Breakfast June 10. Served at the breakfast were potato and regular pancakes,
eggs, sausage, cheese, cheese curds, applesauce, butter, juice, coffee, milk,
water, soft-serve ice cream and maple syrup. Even during the last hour of the
breakfast, people were still arriving at a steady rate to enjoy the food and
activities, the breakfast becoming lunch for some. Smith Bros. Meats and
Catering provided and prepared the sausage for the breakfast. Volunteers made
the pancakes, as well as handed out the sides and beverages.
There were raffles for prizes donated by local businesses, a petting zoo was
provided, with animals such as goats and ponies. Eugene Heindt brought his
hit-and-miss motor, manufactured by John Lawson Manufacturing Company in 1908,
for the antique tractor show portion. John Reynolds helped him start it.
The Greenwood Area Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service were set up to
answer questions from the public and advertise their next fundraiser. Kids took
a ride on the Kiddy Train for a round-of-the-barn, and children waited their
turn by playing on the swing set, and older kids shot some hoops before and
after eating.

History, An Important Part of Community (2024)

Preserving historical documents and landmarks in Neillsville is a goal Natalie
Erpenbach has as president of the Neillsville’s Historical Preservation
Commission. She’d also like to see a self-guided cemetery tour of the
Neillsville City Cemetery. She credits the Historic Preservation Commission and
the 1897 Clark County Jail Museum for their ideas and support in these
endeavors.
Erpenbach’s interest in history could be considered a life-long passion. “I was
10 years old when I asked for a set of history books for Christmas,” she said.
“Her interest in local history was sparked when she and her daughter, Holly
visited the 1897 Clark County Jail Museum in 2005. “I had hard time leaving. I
fell in love with the place,” she said. “I started going to meetings.” This
visit to the museum, nearly 20 years ago, has encouraged Erpenbach to been
immersed in local history ever since.
Over a year ago, Erpenbach and Steve Roberts acquired a building in downtown
Neillsville to house photographs, archives, and historical documents. A
Wisconsin program, Main Street Bounce Back Grant, allowed them to lease a vacant
space in a building across from the Neillsville Public Library. Hence, The
History Room came into being.
“I’m always watching for different funding opportunities, planning, and
development grants,” said Erpenbach. “The goal was two-fold: provide a better
environment for photos, archives, book preservation and community access,” said
Erpenbach. “We’re open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. when the farmers market is open.”
The Historic Preservation Commission has ongoing projects to maintain interest
in local history. “We’re doing a self-guided cemetery tour with a QR code,” said
Erpenbach. “I want it done by Heritage Days Festival”.
This historical plaque, identifying Neillsville’s founder James O’Neill, is set
beside his gravestone.
During a self-guided tour, visitors will see is a bronze plaque beside
Neillsville’s founder James O’Neill’s gravesite, easily seen from the road.
Another project of interest is the self-guided walking tour of historic homes.
“The future project is to expand the current walking tour of historic
properties,” said Erpenbach. The historic home brochure will be incorporated
into the storybook walking trail in Schuster Park through Heritage Days Festival
(in July). The Historic Preservation Commission placed plaques in front of some
of the historic homes, identifying the dates and the home’s original owner.
History involves people, whether they preserved history or made history.
Erpenbach and Roberts along with the Clark County Historical Society and
Historic Preservation Commission have worked to preserve history. “All these
people who’ve been involved with keeping history. . .” said Erpenbach. “I do
what I can for my community. Everyone does their piece along the way. Steve and
I did ‘Images of America: Clark County,’” said Erpenbach. It has numerous photos
and information about Clark County, Wisconsin. She considers this to be one of
her achievements—preserving history.
“There’s more work to be done. I have to find the time to do it,” said
Erpenbach. “I’ll always be involved as long as I enjoy it and I’m healthy. It’s
fun.”
She hopes people will learn from history. “Learn from the past,” Erpenbach said.
“History does repeat itself. Appreciate all that’s come before – the ingenuity
and innovation. Think positive. You can’t change history. It is what it is.”
The Historic Preservation Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at
Neillsville City Hall at 6 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Neillsville Kiwanis Awarded Scholarships (- 2024)
The Kiwanis Club of Neillsville awarded scholarships to three Neillsville High
School graduates. (L-r) Cameron Waters was awarded the Kiwanis Academic
scholarship for $1,000; Micah Zoschke was awarded the Bruce Beilfuss/Kiwanis
scholarship for $1,350; and Mark Jorgenson was awarded the two-year Technical
School scholarship for $750, presented by Neillsville Kiwanis Club president
Judy Morrow.

Neillsville Police Keeping The Tradition (2024)
For the fourth year in a row, Neillsville Police Department patrolman Isaac
Guyer donated American flags to represent America’s freedom during the week of
Independence Day, celebrated July 4. Since 2020 during the week of Independence
Day, Guyer donated 300 American and Thin Blue Line flags, specifically to those
who have old, worn flags needing replacement. Available were 3x5 outdoor and
indoor flags, one flag per residence, delivered only within Neillsville city
limits. He also replaced worn flags and properly disposed of them.
