Marie Oberle, Thorp High School freshman, received an “A” rating at the
Wisconsin High School Forensic Association Speech Fetival in Madison on
Saturday, April 26, 1974. Marie entered the Oratory category in February, and
qualified for the State contest by earning “A” ratings at both the Eastern
Cloverbelt Sub-district contest and the Eau Claire District Contest, both in
March.
Marie’s speech, “Let’s Not Scrap the Space Program”, was an original 8-minute
persuasive talk. Writing and deliver such a speech is fairly demanding; as a
result, few ninth-graders attempt to do so. Most entrants in this category are
experienced speakers in eleventh and twelfth grades, which make Marie’s receipt
of an “A” doubly significant. In recognition of her accomplishment, Marie will
receive a gold medal from the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association
