DeMert, Oscar E. (9 December 1909 – 1 March 1981)
Oscar E. DeMert, 71, of Neillsville, passed away in Neillsville Memorial
Hospital on Sunday morning, March 1. DeMert was born on December 9, 1909, in
Marquette County to Edward and Pauline (Hallman) DeMert. His early education was
in that county; at the age of twelve he moved with his parents to Wood County
where he completed his education. He then worked in Wood County for several
years.
On December 21, 1932, he married Isabelle Kuester in Neillsville ceremonies. The
couple then farmed in the Town of York for several years and later moved into
Neillsville where he worked for Neillsville Milk Products for many years. He
later was employed at the state’s Black River Boys’ Camp until retiring eight
years ago. He was a member of St. John’s congregation in Neillsville.
Surviving him, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Kathyleen Holquin of
Houston, Tex., Mrs. Eleanor Shaw of West Allis and Mrs. Gerald (Karen) Koepp of
Wauwatosa; one son, Robert, Neillsville; three sisters, Mrs. Viola Mauteufel,
Mrs. Richard (Emma) McKracken and Eleanor DeMert, all of Seattle, Wash.; two
brothers, Lawrence and Gus, both of Neillsville; 16 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Viola;
one brother, Walter; and two sisters, Leona and Martha.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, March 3, from St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville, with the Rev. Norman W. Lindloff
officiating, with burial made in the Town of Weston Cemetery. The Gesche Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements.
