Burt Schauer, 17, a senior at Abbotsford High School, has been awarded a four year Army Reserved Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship, beginning with the 1973-74 school year.

Scharer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schauer, Route 1, Abbotsford, received the announcement this week. Selection was made by the United States Continental Army Command ROTC Scholarship Selection Board.

As a result, Schauer may attend any institution that conducts the four year Army Senior ROTC program. Schauer indicated that at least for the first year, he plans to attend the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.

Philip Cassata, high school principal, said the scholarship has a value of approximately $16,000. As a scholarship cadet, the Army will pay for Schauer’s tuition, fees, books, laboratory costs and other puely education expenses for a period of four academic years.

The Army will also pay directly to Schauer an allowance of $199 a month for up to 10 months of each school year. During the six week summer camp, Schauer will receive one-half the base pay of a second lieutenant.

Those chosen, for the scholarship must be outstanding academic students. Schauer is a member of the National Honor Society, forensics club, swing choir, participant in debate, has received the past two years, the Marshfield Elks Club best artist at the school award, and has also received a letter in wrestling.

After school he is employed at Kramer’s IGA.
