Social Study terms such as physical characteristics and cultural traits took on
a new meaning for students at St. Louis School, Dorchester, when Theresa Au, a
Chinese nursing student at Loyola University, Chicago, visited there Wednesday.
The children asked Theresa many questions, and she spent time explaining the
educational system in Hong Kong. She pointed out that there is a heavy emphasis
on being a good student in Hong Kong, because a good education is the key to job
position.
Miss Au told the children that she had learned to speak Chinese as a child, but
learned to write in English before she learned to write in Chinese. She
demonstrated how to write the Chinese symbols. She explained the meaning of her
Chinese name, which translated means “filled with wisdom”, and names of her
sisters.
Miss Au told about the marriage customs that used to exist in China. The
children were surprised to hear that Theresa’s mother was engaged when she was
nine years old. However, Mrs. Au did not meet her husband until the day of the
