WAUSAU -- About 5,000 gallons of whey saturated ditches and a small swampy area
along Highway 13 when two large tanks at the Unity Dairy, Unity, were emptied
during the week-end.
Marathon County deputies were told that the incident took place sometime
Saturday night or Sunday morning. Officials tried to dilute the whey by flushing
the ditches with water.
Dan Maxinoski, a DNR warden from Marshfield, examined the scene and said there
is a potential for groundwater contamination. Valves on the tanks were not
locked, a spokesman said, so anyone entering the plant could have opened them.
