NEILLSVILLE -- The Neillsville City Council Tuesday evening took the first steps toward changing the method of selecting a clerk-treasurer from an elective to an appointive position. The council approved the publication of the ordinance in the current issue of the official newspapers and set Friday for a special meeting to act on the passage of the charter ordinance.

William Gallagher, present clerk-treasurer, will be completing 22 years in that office in April, and there was some indication he may wish to retire. The Council had attempted two years ago to adopt the new ordinance, but the ides had to scraped because of the time limit.

The main reason given for the change is that when the current official does retire, the Council will have some say as to who would succeed him. Mayor Robert Lulloff cited several extra responsibilities which have been added to the office, including the handling of federal Block Grants funds and the creation of the Tax Incremental Financing District.

Also by Council action Tuesday evening, the Neillsville Cable Co., which has provided Cable television to the city for the past two years, was granted permission to increase their rates beginning with the billing in December.

Representatives of the Cable company were present, as was a representative of Hill-Christiansen Inc., the contracted auditors for the City of Neillsville, There was no objections filed during the hearing.

Herb Rhoades and Brad Larsen, members of the city Industrial Park Committee, requested input on plans to attempt to employ a person, at least part-time, to serve as an economic developer and planner for the city, No action was taken.
