In competition with journalists from all parts of the state, a slate of winners
has emerged in the 1977 annual newspaper writers contest sponsored by the
Wisconsin Association of School Boards. Over sixty entries were received and
judged in eight categories. Judges were journalism instructors in Wisconsin
universities: David Lippert, UW-Oshkosh, Robert Taylor, UW-Madison, and Dale
Reich, UW-Whitewater.
One of the winners was Richard W. Peterson of the Owen Enterprise, third place
in the small weekly editorials category. Peters is reporter-writer for the Owen
Enterprise, and had submitted three editorials on the controversy over
discipline in the Owen-Withee School District.
All winners receive certificates singed by Pal A. Hahn, Albany, president of the
WASB, and first place winners will be honored guests of the association at the
57th annual convention banquet in the Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee, January 19,
1978.
The purpose of the contest is to give recognition to those Wisconsin journalists
who are doing an exceptional job of improving public understanding of local
education.
