Mark R. Berry, age 7, was one of a number of young people who received the
Governor’s Youth Award last Thursday in Madison for acts of bravery.
Last January 22, 1978, Mark, when fire began in the family farm home, calmly led
his sisters, age 6 and 1 ½ to the pruch, put on their coats and sent them
outside, then put a blanket over his 7-week-old brother and carried him from the
burning home. Mark’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Berry, Route 1, Curtiss, were
in the barn when the fire started.
The governor’s award is the most recent citation given to Mark. He also received
a letter from President Jimmy Carter and citation from the Wisconsin
Legislature.
