Granton-Grandparent of the Year (Wesenberg - 1981)
Barbara, Susie and Steve Rollins entered their grandmother, Vera Wesenberg, into
the grandparent-of-the-year competition being conducted prior to the annual
Granton Fall Festival. Judges selected their request as best.
Who is this woman that Barb, Susie and Steve are so fond of? She and her family
who will ride in the Granton Fall Festival parade on Sunday, September 13
Vera Wesenberg was born in the Town of Lynn, the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs.
Oscar Sternitzky, Sr. She attended the Poplar Grove School and then worked for
the Walter Hinz family for four years. In December of 1933, she married Fred
Wesenberg. The couple moved to a farm east of Loyal where they worked for an
uncle at $15 a week.
In the summer of 1934, the couple purchased the rural Granton on which Vera
still resides. Their five children are all married and live in the Town of Lynn.
They are Norman, Arnold, Mrs. Verlyn (Frieda) Rollins, Roy and Harvey. Fourteen
grandchildren also make up the family.
Vera’s husband died in January 1970, but she continued to farm with her son,
Harvey. In the winter time you can find her in the barn feeding the calves or
milking the cows. In the summer, she is in the cucumber patch.
Vera is a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a clerk for the Mayflower
School for a number of years. She enjoys gardening, quilting and playing cards.
Her selection came as a result of a contest sponsored by the Granton FFA Alumni.
Her local honor falls on national Grandparents Day, September 13.
