Two girls, Corrine and Alta Martin, ages 11 and 7, respectively, were hit by a
vehicle Wednesday morning, February 6, 1974 at 8:15 a.m., when they ran across
the street and into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by Mrs. Martha Koch,
Colby.
The children, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Martin, Route 2, Colby, had gotten
off a school bus at Zion Lutheran School and the bus had proceeded north. They
ran across the street into the path of the Koch vehicle, traveling south, and
the driver was unable to avoid hitting them.
The children were taken to the Colby Clinic for first aid treatment, and then to
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
Corrine, who right leg was broken above the knee, had a cast put on Monday and
is doing well.
Alta underwent exploratory surgery because of internal bleeding Friday night,
and it was found she had a ruptured liver. She remained in intensive care as of
Monday. Mr. Martin reported her condition has improved.
