A new royal figure has been crowned in Neillsville. Soon-to-be third grader Halo
Schultz is this year’s Neillsville Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 Poppy Princess.
Halo received her crown and sash during a short ceremony for friends, family and
community members Memorial Day at the Legion Hall.
Halo’s responsibility will be to sell paper poppies, with the proceeds going
directly to help veterans or active-duty military personnel with medical or
financial needs. Since 1920, the red poppy has been the official flower of the
American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during
war.
Halo will attend some of the Auxiliary meeting and ride along in parades.
Auxiliary members are trying to bring back the Poppy Princess program after many
years with no princess. Halo was a logical choice for Poppy Princess, as she has
family connections to the military. Her grandfather Marcus Schultz served in the
Navy during the Vietnam War and is a member of the Neillsville American Legion.
Halo’s 101-year-old grandmother, Mary Wiggs of Indiana, served in the Women’s
Army Corps in Italy during World War II.
Halo is part of the American Legion Auxiliary Juniors program, which is for
girls under the age 18 with a family member in the American Legion. For more
information, contact Unit 73 treasurer and district vice president Jesse
Elmhorst at 715-937-8246.
