Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Byron (Golden – 6 October 1981)
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Spencer, East Elm St., Loyal, were honored at an open house
for their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 4, at the Walter Seeger
home, Loyal. (Mrs. Seeger is their niece. Their son, Clarence from Caney, Mich.,
also helped plan the event.
The former Linda Scheel, daughter of Otto and Kate (Vogel) Scheel, was born in
Loyal. She attended the Little Grove School in Clark County although they lived
in Marathon County.
Byron Spencer was born in Ames, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Charity (Rische)
Spencer. He received his education in Iowa and Minnesota and also attended the
Unity High School. He did farm work and they lived on a farm after their
marriage on October 6, 1931. Their wedding took place at the Unity Methodist
Church with the Rev. Bliss officiating.
In the early 1940s, they moved to Madison, where he worked in the Ray Vac
foundry. From there they moved to Kennan in 1948 where he worked in the saw
mill. This spring they moved to Loyal.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Spencer were active in the United Methodist Church work at
Kennan. He was one of the organizers of the Kennan-Georgetown Volunteer Firemen
and she was a member of the Auxiliary. She had also been youth leader in the
Farmers Union. For a number of years, he was president of the Holstein Breeders
association. He served as Chairman of the Town of Kennan and on the Price County
Board of Supervisors for some 20 years.
Among those present for the celebration were Esther Spencer Haslow, Loyal;
Muriel Spencer, Oregon; and Gerhardt Scheel, who were their attendants at the
wedding 50 years ago. Edith Young Verhalen, Loyal, who had cut the cake at the
wedding came to cut the cake at the open house.
