The Humbird American Legion Post 320 and the Humbird American Legion Auxiliary presented Hunter Hardwick an award of excellence at a special meeting held May 17.

Hunter is 12 years old and a student in Thorp. When a classmate started to choke on a slice of apple and couldn’t breathe, the classmate quickly began pointing to his throat to get Hunter’s attention. Hunter immediately took action that was able to quickly dislodge the slice of apple and the young man was able to recover his breath.

The certificate that was presented to Hunter reads, “Certificate of Excellence – The Humbird American Legion Post 320 and the Humbird American Legion Auxiliary present this Certificate of Excellence to Hunter Beryl Hardwick of Thorp, Wisconsin, for his heroic efforts, quick thinking and calm presence of mind, resulting in life-saving actions that prevented a fellow student from choking on May 9, 2011. You are truly a Hero, Hunter Beryl Hardwick, and we salute you!”

The auxiliary will also be submitting a nomination to their national headquarters for a Youth Hero Award.

Hunter is the son of Stephanie Van Ert and the late Andrew Hardwick. He is the grandson of Brad Hardwick of Black River Falls.
