Freida Margaret Hemersbach was born on May 3, 1921, at St. Mary’s Ridge near
Norwalk, the daughter of Frank and Katie (nee Herrick) Hemersbach. She moved to
the Greenwood area in 1932 with her family, and was raised on the family farm.
Freida attended St. Mary’s Parochial School in Greenwood, graduating from the
eighth grade. She later did housekeeping for several families in the Greenwood
area. On Nov. 15, 1941, she married Norman H. Thorson in Milwaukee. They later
separated. Freida was a stay-at-home mom for many years. In her later years, she
worked for Pogo’s Restaurant in Owen, Ken’s Bakery in Owen and Thorp, and
finally for Jack Jalling at Owen IGA Foodliner and Bakery, until retiring at the
age of 72. She was a wonderful cook and baker, hosting many family
get-togethers. Freida loved to visit with her grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren. Freida did some traveling
with her friends in her retirement years. She later moved in with her daughter
Kathleen and son-in-law James Northup. She made many new friends and did a lot
of walking. Freida lived with Kathleen and James until moving into Riverside
Assisted Living in August 2017.
She is survived by her children: Karen (Larry) Dallman of Greenwood, Kenneth
(Bev) Thorson of Eau Claire, Konrad (Sandy) Thorson of Stanley, Kathleen (James)
Northup of Greenwood, Kevin (Sara) Thorson of Withee, and Karol (special friend
Thomas Reetz) Cole of Greenwood; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven
great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Pat Hemersbach of Tucson, Ariz.; and
many nieces and nephews.
Freida was preceded in death by her parents; her granddaughter, Melissa Cole, in
October 1999; and seven brothers and three sisters.
The world has been blessed to have this wonderful lady on it for 101 years,
during which time she touched so many lives.
