Slone, Daniel Robert (24 March 1944 – 17 July 2022)

Daniel Robert Slone, 78, of Streator, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022, at Parker Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Streator, after a long illness.

Dan was born March 24, 1944, in Morris to Grant Yates Slone and Blanche (Miller) Slone. The family lived in Newark until Feb. 1958, when the family purchased a farm in rural Greenwood Wisconsin.

Dan was a Boy Scout and was involved in bike riding, pedaling alone from Newark to Seneca to earn a badge. He took on a paper route when young in Illinois so he could provide for himself and contribute to family expenses. He even convinced his sister Kathy that she should do it too. He delivered the Chicago Tribune, while she carried the Ottawa Times.

Upon graduation from Neillsville High School in 1962, Dan went on to study Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he met and married his first wife MaryJo Hady, who survives. To this union were born two children, Angela Marie and Daniel Robert, who also survive. The couple purchased the family farm and raised feeder pigs. Dan also worked for Wuethrich Creamery in Greenwood, makers of Grassland Butter.

After leaving farming, Dan worked as an Electrician for Otis Elevator, installing elevators in Dallas, Texas during the early 1980's boom there. Later, he returned to Illinois and worked construction in Streator, where he eventually settled.

In 1998, Dan married Joy Holcomb, who survives. Joy sang with him and became his accompanist, in life as well as song. All of his life, Dan was known as an exceptional Tenor Vocalist. He sang solos as a child in church and duets in the Neillsville High School chorus and, while in his teens, was a member of The Singing Slones quartet. Dan also performed as a soloist with the University of Wisconsin Men's Chorus, and the Clark County Wisconsin Men's Chorus. He was also a member of the Prairie Singers group for 30-plus years, as well as the church choir of the United Methodist Church. Dan also performed locally for many weddings and other special events throughout his life.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Grant Yates Slone, Jr. and Blanche (Miller) Slone; a brother Grant Leslie Slone; and grandparents Grant Y. (Lillian Armstrong) Slone, Sr. and Leslie R. (Ruth Mill) Miller.

He is survived by his siblings, Kathleen Hutchison (Richard), Richard (Anita) Slone, Mary Colleen Slone and Ruth Ellen Slone. As the oldest of six siblings he was a responsible, thoughtful and reliable family member and often charged with looking after them when the parents were busy. Dan was also Papa to Angela Marie (Matthew) Tompach of Columbus, and Daniel Robert (Amy) Slone, Arbor Vitae. Grandpa Dan to Dr. LeslieAnn (Franklin) Kao, Rebecca (Keith) Murphy, Katherine (Scott) Weideman, Madeline Tompach, Oyouka Slone and Bowen Slone; stepfather to Stephen Holcomb of North Carolina, Cindy Holcomb of Peoria and Sherry (Larry) Hendricks of Alabama.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 26th at the First United Methodist Church, Streator. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Monday, July 25th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. A Masonic ritual will be held at 6:45 P.M. Additional visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 26th at the First United Methodist Church, Streator.

Pallbearers will be Michael Hutchison, Rick Slone, Scott Slone, Matthew Tompach, Franklin Kao, Scott Weideman, Tanner Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Steven Holcomb, LeslieAnn Kao, Madeline Tompach, Bowen Slone, Oyouka Slone and Katherine Weideman.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Streator, the Prairie Singers, or the family.
