Free, CW4 Robert L. (Retires - 1982)
A retirement party was held on Saturday, January 23, at the Holiday Inn of Eau
Claire in honor of CW4 Robert L. Free who retired on January 15 from HHC 264th
Engineer Group, Eau Claire, after having served with the U.S. Army and the
Wisconsin National Guard for over 37 years.
Free, 1113 Emery St., Neillsville, started his military career in January 1943
when he joined the U.S. Army. He served on active duty for three years with duty
in the Pacific, being discharged in January 1946, holding the rank of corporal.
In September 1947, he joined the Wisconsin National Guard, with Service Company
1st Battle Group 128th Infantry at Fort Lewis, Washington, from September 1961
to August 1962, during the call-up of the Wisconsin National Guard for the
Berlin Crisis. In May of 1963 Free transferred to HHC 3rd Infantry Brigade,
currently designated as HHC 264th Engineer Group, serving as food advisor. He
was appointed to the grade of CW4 on April 21, 1972.
Bob will be continuing his civilian career with the Clark County Highway
Department in Neillsville.
