Herron, Roy S. Sr. (1 October 1923 - 3 April 1982) With Flag
Roy S. Herron, Sr., 58, a former Town of Grant farmer, passed away in a Madison
Veterans Hospital on Saturday, April 3, after a long illness.
Mr. Heron was born on October 1, 1923, in Baraboo to John S. and Anna (Opperman)
Herron. He received his education in that community. He later moved to Illinois
where he worked as a cattle buyer. On November 20, 1942, he married Mildred
Schlick in Winneconne ceremonies. In 1956, the couple moved to the Neillsville
area where he farmed in the Town of Grant until 1968 when failing health forced
his retirement. He continued to make his home on the farm. He was a World War II
veteran. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.
Surviving him are three sons, Roy, Jr., of Neillsville and Larry and David, both
of Marshfield; a daughter; Mrs. Michael (Ann) Thompson, Neillsville; three
sisters, Dorothy Grossenbacher of Oshkosh, Mrs. John (May) Grigoulunas of
Hancock and Mrs. William (Vivian) Vetrone of Alma Center; and fourteen
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife, December 13, 1978; two sons; a brother; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, April 7, from the Neillsville
United Church of Christ with the Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Burial was in the
Neillsville City Cemetery; the Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
