Clark County Represented at Statewide History Conference
Natalie Erpenbach and Shirley Anderson represented Clark County at the 16th
annual Local History and Historic Preservation Conference in Rothschild Oct. 13,
hosted by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Erpenbach is a member of the
Neillsville Historic Preservation Commission and curator of the 1897 Clark
County Jail Museum. Erpenbach is the jail museum board vice president and Clark
County Historical Society secretary.
The two women attended several workshops and classes on advocating for local
history, working with homeowners for preservation of historic structures,
developing Facebook pages and presentations to share local history information,
and determining what to collect and what not to keep.
The goal of the Wisconsin Historical Society is to help Wisconsinites find
themselves as part of the state story. Society members also discuss the past to
see how it connects to the vital issues of the present and future.
“It is important to increase participation in the community and communicate the
importance of local history in planning for the future,” wrote Anderson in a
press release.
There are a couple of ways to get involved in learning about one’s history on
the local level. For one, The History Room, 442 Hewett St., Neillsville, is open
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for anyone wishing to peruse
historical documents, photographs and artifacts from Neillsville and the
surrounding area.
Museum volunteers also invite the public to attend the jail museum’s monthly
board and membership meetings, which take place at The History Room the first
Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.
