Newton, Maude (Tribute- 1982)
Humbird News by writer, Janet Barney
Maude Newton, she was one of those people never forgotten once you had met her.
She lived an active life to the very end, never one to just sit and let life go
by. She wrote letters to friends, crocheted, read the newspaper and watched the
6:00 news daily. All this at the age of 96.
Maude Newton devoted her life to her family, her community and her
organizations.
At an early age she was married and had four children and was widowed but went
on and taught school, remarried, had a second family and kept busy with 4-H when
her children were young. She belonged to the Methodist Church, taught Sunday
school, was active in Ladies Aide and was the secretary of the Eastern Star for
23 years. She served in the Bluff View Lodge No. 222 going through all the
offices, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and in general was a good
mother, neighbor and friend. She wrote for 34 years for The Clark County Press
and also wrote for the Banner Journal and the Old Humbird Enterprise.
So, today she was remembered with tears and love as Clark County had known her
all these 96 years. Maude Newton also devoted her life to education, not only
the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, but the fundamentals of basic
caring and tolerance of listening instead of hearing and of seeing without
blinders. She was our Humbird librarian for many years, encouraging the young to
read and go places in books where otherwise one would not go and see.
To us, whom she leaves behind, she will not be forgotten, as she taught us well.
The world changes and so do lives, so live life to its fullest. You pass this
way but once.
