Newton, Maude M. (1885 - 10 May 1982)
Maude M. Newton, 96, died Monday, May 10, at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.
Maude Campbell was born in Humbird, educated there and graduated in 1904. She
became a school teacher and then married Zene Russell. To this union, four
children were born: Hallie and Kenneth, who preceded their mother in death;
Helene Nelson of Eau Claire and Hillard of Minneapolis, Mn.
After the death of her first husband, she married Sam Newton in 1924 Humbird
ceremonies. Of this marriage, a daughter, Winnifred (Joos), arrived. Mr. Newton
died in 1964. Prior to making her home in Eau Claire, where she lived with her
daughter, Helene, Mrs. Newton lived in Humbird. It was there that she taught
school, served as librarian and was a longtime correspondent for The Press,
Black River Falls Banner Journal and the former Humbird Enterprise. She was a
member of the Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary, United
Methodist Church and that church’s Ladies’ Aide.
Besides her children, Helene, Winnie and Hillard, she is also survived by ten
grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the Humbird United Methodist Church with burial
made in the Town of Mentor Cemetery.
