Gurney, William George (4 June 1909 – 12 June 1982)
The Rev. Howard Ott of the Neillsville United Methodist Church officiated at the
Tuesday afternoon, June 15, funeral services for William George Gurney. The
service was held at the Gesche Funeral Home with burial in the Town of Pine
Valley Cemetery. Mr. Gurney, 73, of Rt. 3 Neillsville, passed away on Saturday
morning, June 12, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
The deceased was born on June 4, 1909, in Taylor County to Lewis and Lucy
(Higgins) Gurney. After receiving his education, he moved to Michigan with his
mother and made his home there for several years. In 1934, he moved back to
Wisconsin and then to Clark County.
On April 29, 1937, he married Elma Kauffman in Janesville ceremonies. The couple
then made their home in northern Clark County until 1950 when they moved to the
Town of Pine Valley where he farmed for several years. They then moved to
Milwaukee where he worked for eight years, returning the Town of Weston in 1968
and making their home there the rest of his life. From 1968 to 1974, he was
employed by Nelson Muffler.
Surviving him, besides his wife, are six sons, Charles of Burks Falls, Ontario,
Eugene of Cable, Jerome of Franklin and William, Galen and Lewis, all of
Neillsville; and three daughters, Nancy Stelter of Milwaukee and Mrs. Wayne
(Lucille) Oldham and Mrs. Steve (Barbara) Roberts, both of Neillsville. Joining
them are three sisters, Mary Woods of Lake Geneva, Mrs. Henry (Nellie) Adelman
of Oswego and Eulia Gurney of Chicago; a brother, Joseph, Janesville; 32
grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three
brothers and a sister.
Serving as pallbearers were Gerald and George Tischendorf and Lewis, Robert,
John and Bruce Gurney.
