Slowiak, Marie V. (10 December 1925 – 23 November 2022)
MARIE V. SLOWIAK, age 96, of Thorp, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022,
at Oakbrook Health & Rehabilitation in Thorp.
Marie Victoria Polak was born on December 10, 1925, in the Town of Roosevelt,
rural Lublin, the daughter of Jacob and Angeline (Czysczon) Polak. She was
raised on the family farm, attended area schools, and graduated from Thorp High
School in 1944. During her high school years, Marie worked at the bakery in
Thorp and also at the Thorp Dairy Bar. After completing her education, Marie
moved to Minneapolis, MN for a short time before moving to Chicago, IL. She was
united in marriage to Vincent G. Slowiak on July 31, 1948, at St. Stanislaus
Catholic Church in Lublin. While living in Chicago, Marie worked at Motorola for
over 20 years. She moved back to Thorp in 1987 and has resided at her home on W.
Schmidt Street ever since. She was a member of St. Bernard – St. Hedwig Catholic
Church and its’ PCCW.
Even though Marie never had any children of her own, she was "mom" to many,
always loving and fun to be around. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling,
playing cards, and crocheting Afghans.
She is survived by 2 sisters: Rose Sromek of Gilman, and Harriet Milstroh of
Minneapolis, MN; 1 brother: Tony (Helen) Polak of Chicago, IL; her very special
friends from Chicago: Allan, Barb, Darren, & Arlene; and many nieces & nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vincent on September 12,
2009; 2 brothers: Edward & Chester Polak; and 1 sister: Emily Biernat.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 2, 2022, at St.
Bernard - St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. Rev. Stanislaus Michael Antony
will officiate, and burial will follow in New St. Hedwig Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Sromek, Roger Slowiak, Charlie Slowiak, Allan Kojro,
Gregory Sromek, & Ray Biernat. Visitation will be held on Friday, at the church,
from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
