A local man is one of six University of Wisconsin La Crosse Army ROTC cadets to
receive his commission as a second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army in a recent
commissioning ceremony held on the University campus. Attending the ceremony
were cadets, wives, and the complete military science faculty and staff. LTC
Donald O. Rumpel, chairman of the Military Science Department, performed the
actual commissioning of the six new Army officers.
Receiving the gold bars of an Army second Lieutenant was Larry Schmidt, son of
Mr. and Mrs. George Schmidt, Route 1, Colby. He as commissioned a second
lieutenant in the signal corps.
Lt. Schmidt, a 1971 graduate of Colby High School, also received his Bachelor’s
degree in education during mid-year graduation ceremonies at the University of
Wisconsin, La Crosse.
In addition to taking part in the Army ROTC program, Lt. Schmidt was active in
various University activities too, including the track team, cross country and
Lettermen’s Club.
