An ROTC Cadet at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point has received a
lifesaving award for reviving a teenage last summer following a swimming
accident.
The Pershing Rifles organization at the University recently conferred the award
upon Cadet Burt Schauer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schauer, Abbotsford.
Schauer, a natural resources student, was serving on the staff of the Central
Wisconsin Environmental Center at Sunset Lake in eastern Portage County, where
he administered emergency first aid to Scott Drummond, 15, Stevens Point.
The accident occurred on August 3, 1976.
Schauer recalled that on that day, Scott had been engaging in swimming games
when he experienced difficulty and needed to be pulled from the water by a
lifeguard.
Several hours later, because he still had water in his lungs, he collapsed at
the camp and went into shock. While medical assistance was being sought, Schauer
noticed that the youth had ceased breathing and immediately began to administer
mouth to mouth resuscitation. Schauer aided the youth in that manner twice
before professional help arrived.
