The Colby Fire Department was called out last Thursday night at 11:50 when a
fire complete destroyed the farm home and all its contents belonging to Mr. and
Mrs. Bride Bender, Route 1, Colby. Mrs. Bender and their son, Dean, narrowly
escaped from the burning house in their night clothes.
Fire Chief Royal Awe said when the firefighters arrived the garage, basement and
half the house were engulfed in flames.
The Edgar Fire Department was called to help provide water with its tanker. Jim
Eggebrecht, Route 2, Colby, also furnished water with his whey truck.
Bender said he was on the couch dozing when he heard crackling noises. As he
opened the basement door, flames shot him away from the stairway. In just a few
minute he said half the house was in flames.
The house, remodeled recently, has been in the family over 50 years Bender
said..
The family is presently living in a mobile home set up in the Bender’s yard
until the family can rebuild.
