An appearance by Santa Claus and characters from the Abbotsford Christmas parade
highlighted Ned Sterling’s 89th birthday party Monday evening at Continental
Manor in Abbotsford. The party was given by two of his daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Nila)
Buss and Mrs. Ernest (Marge) Schade, both of Abbotsford.
Mr. and Mrs. Emil Daellenbach played Christmas carols and Santa distributed over
80 bags of goodies as Disney characters, led by Miss Elsie Bremer, greeted the
residents.
Sterling, who operated a farm in the Town of Holton most of his life, has lived
at Continental Manor the past two year. Previously he was engaged in carpenter
work in the Abbotsford area.
He was married to the former Elizabeth Brown, who died in 1970. The couple had
six children: Melvin, killed in action during World War II, Lester, Woodburn,
Oregon, Lucille, Ottumwa, Iowa, Evenly, Chicago, and Marge and Nila of
Abbotsford. He has fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
