DeMert, Lawrence F. (30 May 1907 – 28 September 1982)
Lawrence F. DeMert, who was a cheesemaker for many years, passed away at the age
of 75 at his Rt. 4 Neillsville home on Thursday, October 28.
The deceased was born on May 30, 1907, in Marquette County to Edward and Paulina
(Hallman) DeMert. After his education, he worked as a cheesemaker for many
years. On June 18, 1930, he married Edna N. Grimm in Wisconsin Rapids ceremonies
and the couple farmed in Marquette and Wood Counties and then moved to Clark
County. He farmed in the Town of Weston for 30 years and then worked for
Weyerhauser Corporation of Marshfield for 16 more years, retiring in 1972. He
continued to make his residence in the Town of Weston.
Surviving him, besides his wife, are two sons, Leonard of Fennimore and David of
Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Marjorie) Lau of Stratford and Mrs.
Audrey Meyer of Neillsville; three sisters, Mrs. Robert (Viola) Manteufel, Mrs.
Richard (Emma) McCracken and Eleanor DeMert, all of Seattle, Wash.; twelve
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Oscar and Gust; and two
sisters, Leona and Martha.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 1, from St. John’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Neillsville with the Rev. Norman W. Lindloff officiating, and
burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery; the Gesche Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
