Schaer, Andrew (No dates known)

Columbia news: The property that Helen M Urban once owned in Columbia area, was the place still known as the old Andrew Schaer farm. Andrew was a bachelor who came here from Switzerland, and was the first owner of the land. He built a small log cabin in which he lived, and other outside buildings, where he kept cattle and chickens.

For a time a nephew, John Schaer, lived with him but he went on to Milwaukee where he worked for a time. But he returned to Switzerland because the American Language was too difficult for him and he longed for his homeland.

I (Irma Sollberger) remember Andrew Schaer. He occasionally came to our store to buy groceries many years ago. Mr. Schaer died in his log cabin and was found there by his neighbors who learned that he wasn’t removing the mail from his mailbox.

Andrew Schaer is buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery.
