Sturdevant, Beth (19 July 1885 – 19 March 1983)
Beth (Youmans) Sturdevant passed away on March 19 at her home in Wheaton,
Maryland. Burial was in Arlington, National Cemetery.
The deceased was the widow of Major Gen. Clarence L. Sturdevant. The couple was
formerly of Neillsville. He was the chief designer of the ALCAN Highway; a state
historical plaque denoting this is in place on the lawn of Neillsville Public
Library.
Mrs. Sturdevant was born in Neillsville on July 19, 1885, the daughter of
Clarion and Nettie (French) Youmans and the granddaughter of B.F. French, an
early-day doctor and prominent citizen of the county. She was educated in the
local schools and graduated from Milwaukee Downer. She and her family lived in
many parts of the world as Gen. Sturdevant served his country.
Mrs. Sturdevant is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Bray, Bethesda,
Maryland; a son, John C. Sturdevant, Wheaton; and three grandchildren. One
niece, Rita Youmans, Warrensburg, Missouri, also survives. She was preceded in
death by her parents; one brother, Guy Youmans and one sister, Viola Youmans.
