On Tuesday evening April 13, 1976, between 6 and 7 p.m. several children were
playing on the street near Don and Nancy’s Bar in Dorchester.
Little Randy Mueller, 4 year old son of Mrs. Barbara Mueller, was one of them.
He accidentally swallowed the suction cup from the toy dart pistol the children
were playing with.
The object was about three fourths of an inch in diameter.
As Randy began to cough and choke, and could not get any breath, Pam Harrelson
noticed his difficulty. She slapped him on the back several times, also hit his
throat, thinking that would dislodge the article. Noticing his face was already
turning blue, and that he was gasping for breath, Pam grabbed the boy by the
feet and held him upside down and pounded his back several times.
Finally the boy expelled the object. He still had a hard time breathing for
several minutes. His 12-year old brother, Ricky took him home on the bicycle.
Even though his throat showed sign of a few hard slaps, Randy is still alive,
thanks to the quick thinking and action of 12-year old Pam.
Pam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Connie (Tom) Harrelson.
