Mews is also a 1972 graduate of Colby High School. He attended UW Marshfield –
Wood County campus for 2 years. He will graduate from UW-Madison in December,
majoring in mechanical engineering.
The wedding date has been set for July 17, 1976.

Mattes Livestock Market Reopens (16 Aug 1976)

Slightly more than two months after the old sales barn was destroyed by
lightning and fire on June 15, 1976, Mattes Market re-opened for business. After
some last minute clean-up, the first calf was sold at Mattes on Monday, August
16. The 120 lb. Holstein bull calf owned by Dave Moore of Stanley was sold to
Steve Novotny of Cadott at 67 cents a pound. So calf #458, the first to be
marketed through Mattes Sales Barn since the fire, went for $80.40 and marked a
new beginning.

It was revealed recently at the Cooperative Educational Services Agency
convention in Chippewa Falls that long time coordinator Henry Anderson of Thorp
will retired December 31, 1976.
A former superintendent of the Thorp School District, Anderson, of 304 West Main
Street, has guided CESA 6 since it was created 11 years ago.

Norwegian Cemetery to Be Restored (1976)

Restoration of the Norwegian Cemetery in the Town of Worden was begun last week.
The cemetery has been neglected for many years, having been used as a cow
pasture at times.
The site is on the old Lavine farm just west of Dean Hubbard’s barn.

Bank Administration Institute, national banking association, with headquarters
in Park Ridge, Illinois, announced the graduation on August 13, 1976, of Edward
J. Bieno, Assistant Cashier, Peoples Exchange Bank, Thorp, Wisconsin, from the
Institute’s School for Bank Administration at the University of Wisconsin.
Ed was among 334 banker students who completed the three-year course of studies
at graduation ceremonies, Friday, August 13, 1976. Altogether, more than 1,200
officers of commercial savings banks, trust companies, holding companies, and
federal regulatory agencies attended the 1976 session, August 1 through August
13.

Skelgas in Chippewa Falls.
A November 6, 1976 wedding at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thorp is being
planned by the couple.

Esther Heyroth, 33, was found dead in her home on Route 1, Thorp, on Sunday
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. , with Father John
Puerner officiating at the Committal service at East Thorp Cemetery.

A Thorp area native, 35 year old Frank Knusta, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Knusta
of rural Lublin, was recently promoted to the rank of sergeant in the Eau Claire
Police Department, according to Police Chief Donald Johnson.
Frank is a 1973 graduate of UW-Eau Claire and a Marine veteran who served four
years with the Washington, D.C., Police Department before joining the Eau Claire
force.

Thorp’s 1976 Bicentennial Queen, Miss Janine Van Ert, waved to the crowd which
lined Broadway Street in Stanley to watch Stanley’s Fall Festival Parade on
Sunday, August 29, 1976. Janine rode on the Thorp Businessmen’s Float, which was
pulled in the Stanley Parade by Hank Nowobielski of Anderson’s Furniture and
Carpeting.

Szczech, Louis (24 Jun 1916 – 26 Aug 1976)
Louis Szczech, 60, died Thursday, August 26, 1976 at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Marshfield.
Mr. Szczech, a town of Reseburg farmer, was born June 24, 1916 in Clark County,
residing in Chicago for a time and coming back to the Thorp area.
Surviving are four brothers, John of Thorp, Walter of Eau Claire, and Frank and
Joe of Chicago; two sisters, Evelyn Rogus of Blue Island, Illinois and Olive
Drake of Berkley, Illinois.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 28 at St. Bernard’s Church, with
Father Brockman officiating at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was made in the
parish cemetery. Pallbearers were Tony Pulokas and nephews, John and Ted Zeck,
Kenneth Rogus, Dennis Machesky and Edward Drake.

Janet Lea Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Smith, and Richard Wayne
Abramczak, so of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Abramczak, all of rural Thorp, were united
in marriage at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp, on Saturday,
August 7, 1976 at two p.m. in a double ring ceremony. Mary Ann Smasal sang
“Follow Me” and Wedding Song.”
Given in marriage by her parents, the bride wore an empire styled gown made of
white organza with high stand up collard and full sleeves with long cuffs. She
carried a cross shaped bouquet of Sonia roses, and completing her ensemble was a
net veil with embroidered daisies attached to a daisy crown.
Gloria Smith was made of honor, and bridesmaids were Geri Smith, Cheryl Janicki
and Shirley Abramczak. They carried white wicker baskets of carnations and ball
mums.
Attending the groom were Dean Abramczak as best man and Norman Ligenza, Bog
Rogus and Gary Zurakowski as groomsmen. Ushers were Casey Zajack and Don Smith.
A reception and supper were held at the American Legion Hall, Thorp.
The bride is a clerk typist at ITT Life Insurance and the groom is a
self-employed carpenter. They will make their home at 105 West Main, Thorp.
