Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Wichmans Funeral Home, Appleton,
for Cameron Smith.
He had been a resident of Appleton since 1951, where he was employed by Warner
Electric Supply at Neenah.
Survivors include his mother Mrs. Martha Harmel, Curtiss.

Robert J. Carpenter, of Greenwood, has recently attained membership in National

Chaltry, Denise (OEA Awards - 1986)
Denise Chaltry, daughter of Leonard and Arleen Chaltry, Neillsville, a 1985
graduate from District One Technical Institute, recently competed at the OEA
(Office Education Association) national competition in Columbus, Ohio. Chaltry
earned her way to the nationals by placing third at state competition in March
in Milwaukee. At the nationals, Chaltry place third in the nation in Data
Processing Job Application and in the upper 15 percent in the nation in Computer
Literacy (the minimum for recognition is 85 percent). She received the OEA Merit
Scholar Award for knowledge and history of OEA and the Ambassador Award for
active service in OEA. She had previously won the Stateswoman Award, the
counterpart of the Ambassador Award at the state level. Chaltry was the head
voting delegate from Wisconsin which involves voting in new officers. She ended
her year, 1985-86, as State Vice President of OEA for Wisconsin.

Follen, Dawn (Nat’l Award Winner in Spanish - 1986)
Dawn Follen has been named a U.S. National Award winner in Spanish, as announced
recently by the U.S. Achievement Academy. A Neillsville School student, Follen
was nominated by her Spanish instructor, Donna Dekker. Her name will appear in
the Academy’s official yearbook, published annually.
Dawn is the daughter of Phil and Donita Follen, 1209 Bruley, Neillsville. Her
grandparents are Harry and Lorraine Follen, Vesper, Geraldine Gilberts of
Menomonie, and the late Herbert Knaack.

Dr. Loring D. Knecht, professor of Romance Languages and 37-year faculty member
at St. Olaf College, will give the keynote address at St. Olaf’s annual Honors
Day Convocation, Wednesday, May 7. Seven hundred sixty-two students will be
cited for academic achievement at the 9:P50 a.m. convocation, which will be held
in Boe Memorial Chapel.
Honors Day is held annually in May to recognize all students who have attained a
3.30 grade point average or higher during their student careers at St. Olaf. The
students’ names are listed in a special program for the day along with the names
of those who have been elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Students who are
scholarship and award winners also are recognized at the event.
Among those students recognized during Honors Day activities is Karen M.
Heineck, 1004 E. 2nd St., Neillsville.

Mazola, Belle (Mother’s Day Gifts - 1986)
Mother’s Day 1986 was one which Belle Mazola, of Fairchild, will soon not
forget. Her son John Mazola was declared the winner of a drawing sponsored by
Milwaukee radio station WMIL-FM106, but the prizes were awarded to Belle.
The contest was a special Mother’s Day promotion offered by the radio station
and several Milwaukee businesses. Gifts given to Mrs. Mazola include round-trip
airfare to Milwaukee, a Seiko quartz anniversary clock, a family portrait, and
the use of a Ford Mustang filled with enough fuel for a week’s driving.

Meier, William L. (AAL High Sales Honors - 1986)
Officials at Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) have honored William L. Meier,
FIC, P.O. Box 144, Neillsville, for passing the $15 million mark in career sales
of life insurance. Meier is an associated of the Kenneth R. Brueske Agency of
AAL, La Crosse. Meier joined AAL’s field staff in 1981 and has since been
honored by the Association for outstanding sales and services to members four
times. In addition, the National Association of Live Underwriters awarded Meier
its National Quality Award twice and its National Sales Achievement Award four
times. AAL is a fraternal benefit society of more than 1.3 million members who
buy insurance, take part in Association activities, and carry out civic,
humanitarian and service projects in 6,400 AAL local branches. AAL’s home office
is located in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Mohr, Karlyn (State Finalist - 1986)
Miss Karlyn Mohr. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mohr of Neillsville has been
selected as state finalist for Wisconsin’s sixth annual Homecoming Queen
selection to be held May 10 and 11, at the Red Carpet Hotel in Milwaukee. She is
the Neillsville High School Homecoming Queen.
Wisconsin’s Homecoming Queen will receive a cash scholarship plus an all expense
paid trip to compete with queens from the other states for America’s Homecoming
Queen during July in Honolulu, Hawaii. America’s Homecoming Queen will receive a
cash scholarship plus an all expense paid trip to Europe.
America’s Homecoming Queen, Inc. is a non-profit organization promoting
education and educational travel for high school homecoming queens in all fifty
states.

Richmond, John (Top Honors - 1986)
John Richmond, a member of the Granton Junior Dairyman’s Association, took top
honors this past week in the JDA Creed Contest, which was held for all central
Wisconsin schools at Marshfield. John now proceeds to the state contest which
will be held in Viroqua during June.
Barb Rollins, from Granton, took second in the district extemporaneous speaking
contest. Marshfield placed first. In the demonstration contest, Shelly Cook and
Penny Hillert placed second with a herd health demonstration.
Granton FFA host their annual awards program on Tuesday evening, April 29, in
the school cafeteria, at 8:15 p.m. The public is invited.

Riedel, Duane R. (Honor - 1986)
The Neillsville Board of Education has voted to honor the late Duane R. Riedel
by naming the Middle School IMC (library after him). Mr. Riedel passed away
March 31, after serving as principal of Neillsville Elementary School since
1973.
Richard Quast, district administrator, said plaques designating the facility as
the Duane R. Riedel IMC would be placed above entrances to the IMC.
