Neillsville -St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church (Celebrates 100 years - 1986)
This Sunday, May 4, 1986, will mark one of two Centennial Highlights for St.
John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 711 W. 5th St., in Neillsville. It will be a special
Sunday, with a number of worship services, guest speakers, a congregational
dinner, and a number of other activities taking place.
Special worship services, at the normal times of 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., will begin
the festivities. Pastor Jon Wolff, who served St. John’s as their Vicar during
the year of 1982-83, will be the guest speaker during these services. Pastor
Wolff is now serving St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Boyd, Minnesota and
Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church of Granite Falls, Minnesota. These morning services
will also feature the choir singing, an instrumental group providing special
music, and the Church Council serving refreshments after the early service.
A noon congregational dinner will be served, sponsored by the Centennial
Committee and served by the ladies of the P.T.O. Friends of St. John’s are
invited to share this buffet dinner.
A special afternoon service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor James Lindloff
as guest speaker. Pastor Lindloff is the son of Pastor Norman Lindloff who
served as pastor of St. John’s for about 25 years, until 1984. Pastor James
Lindloff grew up in Neillsville and is no himself a minister, serving Martin
Luther Ev. Lutheran Church in Forest Lake, Minnesota.
For this special occasion, Anniversary Historical Booklets which include a
pictorial directory of the congregation will be available. These are being
offered by the Centennial Committee. Also Anniversary Plates and Anniversary
Bells will be available from the Ladies’ Aid. The public is invited to all
segments of this celebration.
St. John’s has chosen, “A Century of God’s Love” as a theme for this 100th
Anniversary celebration. This theme is reflected in the Historical Booklet, the
Sunday Bulletins, and on the anniversary plates and bells. It was 100 years ago
in January of 1886 that the congregation got its start here in Neillsville. St.
John’s start was a bit unusual in that it began with its school.
It asked to have a young man assigned from the seminary to the Wisconsin Synod,
to Neillsville to open and conduct a Christian Day School. This was done in
January 1886 by Mr. H. H. Ebert who started an 18-20 pupil school in a small
office on a side street in the heart of the city. Since he was a seminary
student, he also conducted church services on Sunday afternoon in a rented
building. Thus St. John’s began with a school, and church services tacked on.
St. John’s Lutheran School exists to this day. This year it has about 40
students and 2 1/2 teachers, although at times during its 100 year history it
has had almost 150 students and as many as 4 teachers on its staff.
The church itself was organized on September 6, 1886. This occasion will be
noted with the second highlight of this centennial year of 1886; when September
7, 1986, becomes a special day.
During its100 years, St. John’s has been served by eight different pastors.
Pastor F.J. Eppling, Jr. became the first resident pastor in April of 1886; he
served until 1890. Other pastors include Christian Doehler, 1890-1892; Fredrich
Thrum, 1892-1904; Herman Brandt, 1904-1928; William Baumann, 1928-1948; Alfred
Schewe, 1948-1959; Norman Lindloff, 1959-1984; and Richard Weber, 1985-the
present.
CHURCH BUILDINGS
St. John’s has occupied two sites in our city. It has had two church buildings,
two school buildings, and two different parsonages. It’s first church was built
in 1887, on the corner of Oak & Fifth Streets. This building, with a number of
remodeling’s and enlargements served the congregation for 82 years. It was
replaced by the present church, at 711 W. 5th Street, which was finished and
dedicated to the lord’s service in 1968.
St. John’s first school building was built in 1890, on Oak Street directly north
of the church. It served the church until 1955, with one major enlargement in
1906. This building still serves Neillsville today, as the Senior Citizen Center
on the corner of Oak and 6th Streets. During 1955, St. John’s built its present
school building at 805 W. 5th Street.
The first parsonage for St. John’s was located on the corner of Oak and 4th
Streets and the present parsonage is located on 5th Street, just east of the
church. This home was built at the same time as the church, in 1968.
St. John’s today, a congregation of about 775 souls, with its roots a part of
Neillsville for the past 100 years, its members are using the opportunity which
this anniversary offers, to thank God for the past 100 years of His love, to
work for Him in the present, and to plan to continue to serve him in the future.
Rev. Richard Weber is the current pastor at St. John’s. The staff of St. John’s
school includes, principal and upper grades teacher Mr. Terry Schallert, middle
grades teacher, Mrs. Sharon Nemitz, and lower grades, teacher Mrs. Kelley
Schallert.
