The biggest difference between Colby and San Salvador, El Salvador, is the
temperature, said Paula Polanco, foreign exchange student at Colby High School.
The 18-year-old said that it is very hot in San Salvador, while the fall
temperatures seem very cold. Other differences mentioned include the type of
food that is eaten.
She said meat is her favorite food in San Salvador. An American favorite that
she has picked up in Colby is chocolate.
Living in a dairy region is new for Paula, who arrived here in September. Most
farmers in her home country raise corn or beans. She added only a few farmers
raise cattle. There are also a lot of factory workers in that city.
Schools are also very different, she noted. The normal school year in her
country funs from February to October, with November, December and January off
for vacation. Classes number 10 for her, while she is only taking five at Colby.
She said her school runs from 1:20 in the afternoon to 6:30. She said that not
all students use that day, as some go to classes in the morning. She added that
her brother attends classes all day.
Her school was named Centro Harvard. Students are required to attend school for
12 years, just as they are in the U.S.
A final item she mentioned is that rules are much stricter in the San Salvador
schools than in Colby. Students are not allowed to leave the building in her
home nation unless they are ill.
Paula will be staying in Colby until the end of the school year. So if she
thinks the fall semester is cold, wait until winter comes!
