Wendell Ziegler’s Selected “Parents of the Year” (1986)
Wendell and Angie Ziegler, R. 4 Neillsville, have been chosen as the Neillsville
“Parents of the Year” by the O’Neill Jaycees thanks to an essay written by their
daughter Denise.
The honor, an annual Jaycees project, is based on essays submitted by fourth and
fifth graders at the Neillsville Public School. An essay written by 11-year-old
Denise Ziegler, a fifth grade in Miss Hartung’s class, was selected as the
winner from a thick collection of fine essays submitted for 1986. Wendel Ziegler
said he and his wife were unaware that his daughter had entered them in the
contest until the Jaycees notified them.
In her winning entry, Denise had this to say about her parents: “My mother and
father are special because they spend as much time as they can with me. If I am
not doing good on something they’ll help me and if I am doing something good,
they’ll try to help me keep on doing it good. So maybe if I’m interested, I’ll
do it for a living. I have four older brothers, and they treat us all the same,
and if they punish me, I know that they are trying to teach me a lesson and
they’re not trying to be mean. We’re not rich but you don’t have to be rich to
have love.”
Denise is the youngest of five children in the Ziegler family. Wendell is
employed by Nelson Muffler and Angie at Bob’s IGA. Their prizes for being named
Parents of the Year include a gift certificate and a framed original copy of
their daughter’s essay.
Presenting the couple with their award was Jaycee Ellen Latimer.
